Kajang, Malaysia, 16 February 2021 – The COVID-19 pandemic saw 2020 with lockdowns implemented amongst major countries in the world and borders closed from international travels. Such challenge has resulted in us not able to conduct events physically in a face-to-face setting. As such we, at the New Car Assessment Programme for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) had adopted an unprecedented measure by holding our 4th ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix Awards 2020 via an online Webex platform. The ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix Awards is a biannual event with the objective to commemorate high achievers in the field of vehicle safety in the ASEAN region. The Grand Prix Awards was first held in Kuching, Sarawak in 2014, the second was conducted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2016 and the third was in Karawang, Indonesia in 2018.
There are two main awards that are given out namely the Excellent Award and the Best Safety Performance Award. Under the Excellent Award, 12 winners were identified in which the award criteria are for the company/vehicle/organization/individual that contributes towards the improvement of vehicle safety in the ASEAN market. As for the Best Safety Performance Award, 4 winners or vehicles were selected based on their highest scoring points during the 2019-2020 assessments. MIROS Director-General who is also ASEAN NCAP Secretary-General and Acting Chairman, Adjunct Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim said:
“Our latest roadmap assessment has recently ended ended last year and thus, this is the perfect timing for us to organize the Grand Prix Awards. Unlike the previous three Grand Prix events, we are adopting to a new normal of holding this event as we do not want to hinder the benefits of such important information regarding vehicle safety performance to be widely circulated to consumers and road users. Over the years we saw great efforts have been put forward by vehicle manufacturers to ensure their vehicles are offered with the best safety features for the road users. As such, the awards will provide them with competitive edge against other models that do not offer such safety technologies albeit better passive safety technologies or advanced safety assist. Furthermore, as ASEAN NCAP has been in existence for 10 years now, we would like to recognize not only vehicle models but also organizations or individuals who have worked hand-in-hand with ASEAN NCAP and continuously strived to ensure the significance of vehicle safety. I look forward to work together with these important individuals and organizations as well future vehicle models under the new ASEAN NCAP assessment protocol for 2021-2025.”
